I was born in India and spent my entire childhood in her various cities, experiencing her rich varied culture and languages. However different and distinct each of them are, one thing that is a common tying thread is her festivals.
This painting was inspired by the festival of lights called ¨Deepawali¨ meaning collection of lights. I painted this on a leaf because I wanted to get the right feel of the handmade earthen terracota bowl that is traditionally found especially during this time of the year and placed in homes all across the country with a flame in it. This festival is celebrated mainly with a symbolism of warding off evil and bringing light into darkness.
